Close a case

Before you close a case please note that every client on the case must have a recorded outcome (or be explicitly marked "no outcome"). If any client is still unresolved the close action is blocked and Sunlight will tell you why.

Steps to close

  1. Open the case and choose Close.
  2. In the closure dialog, set the Status:
    • Closed — the case is fully resolved
    • Inactive — the case is paused/on hold
  3. Select an Outcome and add optional Notes.
  4. If your org uses a closure form, fill it out here.
  5. Submit — the case moves out of the default Active list.

You can still find closed cases by filtering the case list by status (Closed or Inactive).

Reopening a closed case

If you need to reopen it later:

  1. Open the closed/inactive case.
  2. Choose Reopen and confirm.
  3. The case returns to Active, and the outcome history is preserved.

Who can close and reopen

  • Requires the Close permission — professional (case-working) roles have it by default.
  • Reopening requires the same Close permission.
  • Participant and volunteer roles do not have this permission by default.
